To be or not to be … like Hamlet. As I filled out a list on index cards of possible topics to discuss, Hamlet made the first fifty cards I filled out. There’s no string of movies* about or called Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, and there’s no Broadway play, that I known of. Yet it’s one of the best known and quoted plays from William Shakespeare. This means to me we really do care about a tiny little country and a monarchy called Demark; even though we couldn’t find it on a map.

The Fountain of Youth

A great referenced body of water nearly the size of a pool, hidden and allusive. The word fountain refers to a spring of water exiting from the earth; but today a fountain conjures images of an artificially produced structure. Maybe it’s the word youth, referring to what older people lack and miss as they near death. How better to beat death then to never age and grow old. Whatever it is, the fountain of youth prize repeatedly sought after.

Killer Robots?!?

AI, short for Artificial Intelligence was coined in 1971. The Three Laws of Robotics were introduced earlier in 1942. But Greek mythology already had Talos, a bronze automaton, a self operating machine. Self-moving and solely guarding the island Crete, patrolling the beaches three times daily. While guarding, Talos threw boulders at approaching ships and would super heat his bronze hands before grabbing hold of men that risked traversing his beachhead. Like the pattern of artificial intelligences in fiction following Frankenstein: "Robots were created and destroyed their creator; robots were created and destroyed their creator; robots were created and destroyed their creator—" *(1)

The pirate in real life is truly a writers dream come true. Trouble on the high seas, treasure, tons of rats mixed with poor quality food, hired by Royalty, and a kick-ass flag. Readers sometimes only want the “Arrr’s” an eye patch, hook for a right hand, and a peg leg. So writers give in to their demands and fail to break the mold. Or do they?

“Dracula”, I think a poster of just the word would be scary enough at nighttime, even for adults. He is the embodiment of horror, vampires, and pale men in black tuxes with capes. For Dracula is the icon of which if you do not refer to him you will get compared to him. Even though he wasn’t the first vampire he goes down in history as, THE ONE.
